The CAF administers most French family benefits, including the back-to-school

In brief: The allocation de rentrée scolaire (ARS) is a means-tested annual payment for each child in education. For 2026 it is €426.87 for ages 6–10, €450.41 for 11–14 and €466.02 for 15–18. Payment lands 18 August in mainland France, Guadeloupe, Guyane and Martinique, and from 4 August in Mayotte and La Réunion. No application is needed for children aged 6 to 15 already registered with the CAF or MSA.

What the ARS is

A one-off annual payment covering part of the cost of the school year — supplies, clothing, equipment. It is paid by the CAF (Caisse d'allocations familiales), or by the MSA (Mutualité sociale agricole) for households in the agricultural scheme.

Roughly three million families receive it each year. Two features surprise people arriving from other systems: it is means-tested but reaches a broad slice of households, not only the lowest earners — and it normally arrives without anyone applying, so some eligible families never realise they qualified.

The amount does not vary with what you actually spend.

Nationality is not a criterion. What matters is legal residence in France, children resident and in education, and registration with the CAF or MSA.

How much is it in 2026?

Child's age20262025
6 to 10€426.87€423.48
11 to 14€450.41€446.85
15 to 18€466.02€462.33

Per child. The 2026 uprating was 0.8%, down from 1.7% in 2025. The ARS is revalued each 1 April in line with INSEE's consumer price index over the preceding twelve months.

Worth putting in context: an increase of roughly €4 per child, against energy prices up 12.4% year-on-year and fresh produce up 3.8%. In real terms, this year's ARS buys less than last year's.

Mayotte has slightly different amounts and its own income ceiling.

Which bracket does my child fall into?

This is where families lose money, because the brackets run on assessment dates rather than school year.

For the 6–10 rate, the child must turn 6 before 1 January following the rentrée and be under 11 on 31 December 2026. For 11–14, at least 11 and under 15 on 31 December 2026. For 15–18, at least 15 and under 18 on 15 September 2026. Full conditions are set out on the CAF site.

The practical effect: a child who turns 15 by 31 December 2026 attracts the €466.02 rate rather than €450.41, because the CAF uses the age the child will be at year-end. A child moving up a school level early doesn't automatically get the higher rate — age governs, not class.

When is it paid?

TerritoryDate
Mainland France, Guadeloupe, Guyane, MartiniqueTuesday 18 August 2026

The dates were confirmed in a communiqué from the Direction de la sécurité sociale on 16 July 2026. Depending on your bank, the transfer may appear one to three working days later.

Do you qualify? The income ceiling

Entitlement is assessed on income from two years earlier — 2024 income for the 2026 payment — and calculated automatically provided your file is up to date.

Children in household2024 income ceiling
1 child€28,956
2 children€35,638
3 children€42,320
4 children€49,002
Each additional child+ €6,682

The ceilings rose 1.8% this year, and the reference figure is your 2024 revenu fiscal de référence. The Ministry of Education publishes the full scale.

The two-year lag catches people out. A recent drop in income doesn't help this year; a recent rise may cost you.

If you're slightly over, check anyway. Exceeding the ceiling by a small margin does not automatically disqualify you — a reduced allocation différentielle can be paid instead. Historically only a small share of recipient families claim it, around 1.7% in 2013, which suggests under-claiming rather than narrow eligibility. Use the simulator on caf.fr if you're within a few thousand euros of the threshold.

Other conditions

The child must be in school or enrolled with the CNED, France's national distance-learning body. Children educated at home are not eligible. Young people in apprenticeships can qualify, unless their pay exceeds a set threshold.

For 2026, the allowance covers children born between 16 September 2008 and 31 December 2020, plus younger children already enrolled in CP.

Do you need to do anything?

Children aged 6 to 15: no. Payment is automatic if your file is up to date and you meet the conditions.

Children aged 16 to 18: yes, and this is the most common reason payment fails. You must declare online that your child is still in school, studying or in an apprenticeship. The requirement applies to children born between 16 September 2008 and 31 December 2010 inclusive. The CAF contacts parents in July by email or post; the declaration is made through the Mon Compte area or the "Caf - Mon Compte" app. Doing it over the summer means the ARS arrives before the school year starts.

Children under 6 starting CP: send a certificat de scolarité to your CAF.

If you're new to the French system

Some points French-language guides assume you know.

Registering with the CAF means obtaining a numéro d'allocataire, issued when your file opens. Expect to provide proof of identity and residence, children's birth certificates with certified translation if issued abroad, and your numéro de sécurité sociale.

The caf.fr portal and all correspondence are in French. CAF offices take in-person appointments, and the France Services network offers free help with administrative procedures nationwide, including in smaller towns.

Declare income accurately rather than favourably. Under-declaration triggers recovery of overpayments, sometimes years later.

If the payment doesn't arrive

  1. Allow for the bank. Up to three working days after 18 August.
  2. Check the 16–18 declaration. Overwhelmingly the most frequent cause.
  3. Check your income declaration. Automatic payment depends on the tax return having been filed.
  4. Check Mes paiements in your CAF account for file status.
  5. Appeal to your CAF's commission de recours amiable if you disagree with a decision.

What else you can claim

These stack with the ARS:

  • Bourses de collège and bourses de lycée — school grants with separate income scales
  • Fonds social collégien / lycéen — discretionary hardship funds held by the school
  • Regional, departmental and municipal schemes — several cover textbooks or vocational equipment
  • Pass Culture for eligible students

Frequently asked

Is the ARS taxable? No. Like other French family benefits it is not subject to income tax and needs no declaration.

Can non-French citizens receive it? Yes, subject to legal residence in France and registration with the CAF or MSA.

What happens in shared custody? The ARS is not split. It goes to the parent who bears the financial cost of the school year, and any change of circumstances should be reported to the CAF promptly.

Is homeschooling covered? No — but CNED enrolment does qualify.

Are apprentices eligible? Yes, unless their pay exceeds the applicable threshold.

Information only, not financial advice. Amounts and thresholds are those published by the CAF and the Ministère de l'Éducation nationale as at the update date.
